    Subject Overview at Key Stage Five (Years 12-13)

    The subjects offered at AS/A2 Level vary dependent upon students’ choices although they generally include English, Mathematics, a selection from the Sciences, Business Studies and ICT. Students will normally commence their studies in Y12 with four subjects at AS Level. It may be possible to include other less common subjects, for example AS/A2 Level Art, Design Technology and Mandarin Chinese after discussion with the specialist teacher(s). 

    A Level Biology

    Cambridge International A Level Biology provides a suitable foundation for the study of biology or related courses in higher education. It is equally suitable for candidates intending to pursue careers or further study in biological sciences, or as part of a course of general education. The Key Concepts of the course are as follows:

    Cells as the units of life

    Biochemical processes

    DNA, the molecule of heredity

    Natural selection

    Organisms in their environment

    Observation and experiment

    A Level Business Studies

    Cambridge International A Level Business provides a suitable foundation for the study of Business or related courses in higher education. It is equally suitable for candidates intending to pursue careers or further study in business or management, or as part of a course of general education. The Key Concepts of the course are as follows:

    Strategy

    A Level Chemistry

    Cambridge International A Level Chemistry provides a suitable foundation for the study of chemistry or related courses in higher education. It is equally suitable for candidates intending to pursue careers or further study in the chemical sciences, or as part of a course of general education. The Key Concepts of the course are as follows:

    Atoms and forces

    Experiments and evidence

    Patterns in chemical behaviour and reactions

    Chemical bonds

    Energy changes.

    A Level ICT

    Cambridge International A Level Applied Information and Communication Technology provides a suitable foundation for the study of ICT or related courses in higher education. It is equally suitable for candidates intending to pursue careers or further study in ICT, or as part of a course of general education. The Key Concepts of the course are as follows:

    Become effective and discerning users of ICT;

    Develop a broad range of ICT skills, knowledge and understanding;

    Students gain an understanding of the structure and use of ICT systems within a wide range of organisations, including the use of a variety of computer networks;

    The wider impact of ICT on society in general;

    ICT system life cycles.

    A Level English Language

    Cambridge International AS and A Level English Language gives learners the opportunity to study English language and its use in contemporary communication. It aims to encourage a critical response to texts in a range of forms, styles and contexts, and to promote skills of communication, reading, research and analysis.

    Through their study, learners will develop an ability to read and analyse material, gaining further knowledge and understanding of English language features and issues, and writing clearly, accurately, creatively and effectively for different purposes and audiences.

    All Year 12 and 13 students are expected to pursue the AS Level course in English even if, ultimately, they choose not to be entered as candidates for the examination.

    A Level Physics

    Cambridge International A Level Physics provides a suitable foundation for the study of physics or related courses in higher education. It is equally suitable for candidates intending to pursue careers or further study in physics or engineering, or as part of a course of general education.

    The Key Concepts of the course are as follows:

    Models of physical systems

    Testing predictions against evidence

    Mathematics as a language and problem-solving tool

    Matter, energy and waves

    Forces and fields.

    A Level Psychology

    Cambridge International AS and A Level Psychology is accepted by universities and employers as proof of knowledge and ability. This syllabus aims to encourage an interest in and appreciation of psychology through an exploration of the ways in which psychology is conducted. This exploration includes a review of a number of important research studies and an opportunity to look at the ways in which psychology has been applied. The syllabus uses a wide variety of assessment techniques that will allow learners to show what they know, understand and are able to do. The emphasis is on the development of psychological skills as well as the learning of psychological knowledge.

    Students in Years 12 and 13 still participate fully in the life of the school; they take part in Physical Education, Sport, assemblies and Extra-Curricular activities, and attend courses in Thinking Skllis and Work Related learning.
